Throughout the years...
From Conception to destruction
The Phoenix rises
In the aftermath of the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, Mount Lofty House entered a long and uncertain period of recovery and reinvention. What had been reduced to ruins slowly gave way to determination, and from 1983 the house was rebuilt with care, reopening in 1986 as a luxury boutique hotel with 8 guest rooms and two restaurants that sought to honour the spirit of the original Hardy residence while embracing a new purpose. Throughout the late 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, the property operated as a retreat for travellers drawn to the Adelaide Hills, its elevated position and historic story giving it a quiet sense of romance and escape. While ownership and ambitions shifted over time, this period was defined by resilience, keeping the house alive in the public imagination and preserving its legacy, until 2009, when a new chapter began and Mount Lofty House stood ready for a bold re-envisioning.
Hardy's Legacy
From 2009 onward, David Horbelt and Malcolm Bean ushered in a defining era for Mount Lofty House, guided by a clear and deeply personal vision to transform the historic property into a world-class luxury escape. With a strong belief in experiential travel and South Australia’s potential on the global stage, Horbelt set about elevating every aspect of the guest journey, investing in meticulous restorations, refined interiors, elevated dining, and service excellence that rivalled the world’s great boutique hotels. Major milestones followed, including the evolution of the estate into a multi-award-winning destination, the creation of complementary luxury experiences such as Sequoia Lodge and Gatekeepers Day Spa, and a renewed emphasis on storytelling, heritage, and place. By 2026, as Mount Lofty House celebrates 40 years as a luxury hotel, Horbelt’s vision is unmistakable: a property that honours its past while confidently standing as one of Australia’s most iconic and immersive adults-only retreat destinations.
